Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen, (HG) is a multisectoral HE-institution with approximately 27,000 students and 2,700 employees. It has had its current form of a comprehensive university of applied sciences since 1993. Both education and research are practice-oriented. The university offers a number of Associate degree programmes, more than 50 Bachelor programmes and more than 15 Master programmes. The School of Sport Studies offers bachelors in Physical Education (PE) and Sport, Health & Management consists of 1.500 students and 120 staff. Within the Netherlands, the School of Sport Studies is a frontrunner in the field of Sport & Health.
The School of Sport Studies consists of two bachelor studies in the field of sport: Sport, Health & Management and Physical Education. Within Sport, Health & Management, Health Enhancing Physical Activity is one of the main topics. Students are taught what the HEPA guidelines are, how to apply them to different individuals, groups and organizations ranging from young to old and from healthy to chronically ill. Furthermore an European bachelor program entitled ‘Physical Activity and Lifestyle Counselling’ was developed (2010-2013) under the leadership of the HG/School of Sport Studies in which HEPA was one of the developed semesters. Moreover the HG/School of Sport Studies is actively contributing in the European master in Health and Physical Activity for many years. Finally, HG is developing a master Healthy Ageing: Sport, Health Care and Wellbeing in which the School of Sport Studies is the intellectual founder. In conclusion, HG has expertise in HEPA incorporated in many different programs and projects.
One of the Bachelor programmes of the School of Sport Studies is Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE). This Bachelor almost celebrates its 100th anniversary so there is a long tradition and expertise in the field of coaching, PE and train-the-trainer concepts. Many different study programmes are developed and carried out for trainer-coaching in sport and top-athlete coaching programmes. Furthermore, HG also is specialized in teach-the-teacher training since the PE Bachelor is all about training students to become a PE teacher. Since 2003 competence based learning has been introduced and used in the development of the curriculaWithin all these programmes HEPA plays in an important role, and together with the expertise of the Bachelor Sport, Health & Management, HG possesses the scientific, theoretical as well as the practical know-how related to HEPA.
